Summer Heat Safety For Our Dogs

Attention: open in a new window. PrintE-mail

I recently saw a story on one of the local TV stations about a dog whose stomach turned after drinking a lot of water after a workout outside with his trainer. With emergency surgery, the dog survived.  But without the fast thinking on the part of his trainer, they very well could have lost this dog.

Another health related problem that may occur with your dog in summer is heat stroke.  Symptoms are rapid, labored breathing and temperature of more than 105 degrees.

Both of these health issues can happen under different circumstances, but summer heat does add to the possibility of these issues. If your dog suffers from either of the above conditions do seek immediate veterinary care.

Here are a couple reminders to help keep our dogs safe in the summer sun:

  1. Do not leave your dog in a closed car or unventilated enclosure on somewhat cool days.
  2. Always have plenty of fresh water available.
  3. Avoid heavy exercise in hot weather.
  4. If your dog it tied outside, make sure it has plenty of shade.
  5. In extreme heat, keep your dogs in a cool spot, preferably in an air conditioned house or room, or at least a room with a fan running.
  6. Keep your dog in good physical condition. Do not let them become overweight, as fat hinders heat loss.
